SYSTEM DESIGN:

A simplified functional system design is illustrated above. As the figure shows, the four system modes (Detection, Verification, Assessment and Operations) has each got its own module. All the modules are linked to a Geographical Information System (GIS) and Relational Data Base Management System (RDBMS), each with a related storage system. The On-Line Data Import module retrieves SAR image data and meteorological data from external data sources. When a SAR image is available at the satellite ground station, an e-mail message will be received by the system. The module will automatically read and interpret the e-mail, and retrieve the corresponding SAR image by FTP. The image will be converted to an internal image format and preprocessed. The preprocessing includes a radiometrical range calibration and a geometrical transformation to the map projection applied. The image is then transferred to the detection module for automatic oil slick screening. The process then follows the scheme briefly described below.

Commercial products were selected for the GIS and the RDBMS (ERDAS and Oracle, correspondingly). The GIS system not only provides the required GIS raster and vector functionality, but also image handling and processing, and a programmable Graphical User Interface (GUI) - everything controllable from application software.
